Room4 Feature Exhibit "Diplomats at the End of the Edo Period - Gonchu Shibata, Minister of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and his Materials -"

Foreign Inquisitor of the Edo Shogunate ・ Bannerman who served as Hyogo Magistrate, etc. and was sent to Europe twice ・ An introduction to the diplomacy at the end of the Edo period and its surroundings based on a number of documents left by Shibata Gochu !.

The following is an overview of the materials deposited at the museum in FY2023. These materials came to the residence of a descendant of Shibata Gochu ( Sadataro ・ Hyuga, 1823 ~ 77 ), a bannerman known for his diplomatic activities at the end of the Edo period, serving as an assistant commissioner ・ accountant ・ foreign magistrate ・ Hyogo magistrate, and other posts in the Edo shogunate. Although Shibata's diary kept during his visit to Europe at the end of the Edo period is well known, ( "Nihon shisou taisei 66 seiyo shimputsu" (Nihon shisou taisei 66: Western Views and Interviews, 1974, Iwanami Shoten ), his diary from 1849 ) to 1873 ) (Kaei 2, 1869 () is also known to exist. In addition, there are many documents ・ drawings ・ documents and drawings ・ photographs ・ and 3D objects other than the diary. Although copies of some of these documents are available at the University of Tokyo Archives and Kobe City Archives, this is the first time that other materials have been exhibited.
