Life Safety ・ Safety Information [Consumer Lifestyle Information] New Lifestyle ! Beware of Door-to-Door Sales of Electricity and Gas

◆Case Study
I am a university student in April and live alone in a rented apartment. A business operator who visited him said, "I would like to see your meter reading because my electricity bill will be reduced. I am asking all the residents in this apartment". I thought it would be okay if I just showed him my meter reading slip, so I followed his instructions. Later, I learned from the Internet that if I gave the customer number on the meter reading slip, the company would change my contract with them without my permission. I have no intention of changing my contract. Please tell me how to deal with this. ( Party : College Student )

< A word of advice
Electricity ・ and gas contract problems tend to increase around the time when people start their new lives. If you receive a sudden visit from a solicitor, including for electricity or gas, do not sign a contract on the spot, but carefully confirm the name of the business, its contact information, and the purpose of the contract.
Electricity and gas meter reading slips contain customer numbers, supply point specific numbers, etc., which are necessary for switching contracts. If you do not intend to sign a contract, clearly decline and handle the information on the meter reading slip with care.
If you are told that the entire apartment building is under contract, be sure to check with the management company, etc. If you are solicited for a "lower rate," check the details of the plan and compare it with other businesses.
If the offer constitutes door-to-door sales under the Act on Specified Commercial Transactions, you can take a cooling off ・ period of 8 days after receiving a legitimate written contract from the business. If you are in trouble, please contact the Consumer Affairs Center of your local government ( Consumer Hotline 188 ).
